Buttermilk Bake Shop, a little bakery on Etsy, opened in the fall of 2008. It was an attempt for me to balance work as a baker and life as a mother to a nine month old, our daughter, Harper. As the bakery grew, so did our family. In 2010 we had another baby girl, Casey, and our life got pretty bananas. So, starting in 2011, Buttermilk Bake Shop will became an Etsy shop devoted to eco-friendly bakery and packaging supplies. To keep the baked goods coming, I’m publishing Buttermilk Bake Shop’s recipes, along with some new ones, here on Buttermilk Bakes. Both spaces will continue to be an ongoing experiment.
My name is Mary. I grew up in Plano, Texas, moved to San Francisco, then Houston, Los Angeles, Chicago, New Canaan, CT, and now we have settled down (hopefully) in Fairfield, CT. Most of those moves were for fun. I say: “y’all”, “all y’all”, “you guys”, and “crap” (the latter, with a thick Midwest accent). I studied Art at SFAI and CalArts, but made a sudden decision to devote my life to making baked goods and babies after I married my husband, Skylar. My mom taught me to bake, and I learned from the best at Auntie Em’s in Los Angeles. (I also met Skylar there.)
