This is for love. A man’s love to be specific. Men love ice cream. Fantasy sports, poker, leaving their clothes on the bathroom floor, bourbon and ice cream. And, sorbet, or gelato, too. Well, at least that is what Skylar loves.
I posted this recipe on MilkyMilk last summer, but it was made with Kuhlua or Bailey’s. Fu-fu liquors do not last long in this house due to yours truly. What can I say? Combine sugar with booze, and my resistance weakens. At the end of last summer, when all our girly drinks ran out, I tired out some bourbon in the sorbet. It was probably one of my best moves during our marriage.
Even though the final grips of winter have yet to completely let go, and it is far from warm enough outside to crave sorbet, I whipped up a batch for our wedding anniversary the other day. Why I have put off making this all winter, I have no idea. It is damn good on any day.
If you do not have an ice cream machine, if you have a zip lock bags and some salt this method will do the trick. Or, rush out and buy the Kitchen Aid attachment. Works like a charm!
Boozy Chocolate Sorbet
Adapted from Ina Garten.
1 ½ cups sugar
¾ cup coco powder, preferably the good stuff
¼ teaspoon kosher salt
3 cups water
½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/3 cup coffee
2 tablespoons bourbon*
Combine the sugar, coco powder, salt, water and coffee in a saucepan. Let the ingredients melt together while stirring over medium heat. When the sugar has dissolved, remove from heat and add in the vanilla and bourbon. Refrigerate overnight, and prepare according to your ice cream maker's instructions.
*If you don’t have any bourbon on hand, or it is not your speed, a coffee or chocolate liquor such as Godiva, Bailey’s or Kuhlua would be a good substitution.
